RIP Kirby Monster
« on: January 10, 2010, 23:06:12 »
Well, it's with a sad heart that I report the demise of my green sea hare that did such a fabulous job on my tank (posted photos of him eating cyano).  My guess is this particular guy really lived on the nuisance film algaes and when he did too good a job, he starved.  He never would take sheet algae.

BTW, Kirby Monster is what my DH and oldest granddaughter named him.

On a positive note, it's apparently not necessarily true that if they die in the DT, they will take out the entire system.  I could tell he was failing, and watched him closely.  I got him out after he didn't move for about 4 hours and he was beginning to smell really bad.  But no bad effects on the tank, I'm glad to say.

Reefchik - I doubt he starved to death if it makes you feel any better.  Sea hares only live for a year, and there's no telling how old he was when you got him.  Sorry for your loss.

You are very fortunate you were able to get him out before the tank was wrecked.  My condolences...

I have  had a few die over the years in a tank, and never had an ill effect, however they were large tanks.

Thanks all.

Reef'd Up, thanks for the info.  That does make me feel better.  I'm such a mush, when anything dies other than a hermit crab I really hate it.  Plus when your grandkids love something and want to see it every time they come over, that makes a difference.

Sea hares reproduce in captivity very well. In fact, their reproduction cycle is fascinating. It's not really child friendly, but if you want to learn more about them, it's cool info. Basically, they know they only have a year to live, so they make the most out of it.
