What do I need for a RODI auto shutoff?

I am assuming there is a kit that uses a float or two and a solenoid.

I don't understand..   What physically shuts off the valve on the input to the RO?

Am I correct that in most cases a pump is used as the "valve" ? the relay just turns it on\off.

mine uses the same hose that is on a fridge drinking water  There is a shutoff valve that you turn off and on by hand.   That valve would need to be a powered valve.

No.  Water will flow through the pump even if it off.

Most use a ASOV like these.  They work on differential pressure.

I highly recommend against the Kent Marine version to shut off your RO/DI.  Their float valve isn't strong enough to shut off the RO/DI unit properly...so it'll constantly turn itself on and off again.  I have that problem and so have pretty much everyone else I've run across online.  It's ok if you have an overflow drain in your container...and remember to shut the RO/DI physically off.  Otherwise, you'll run up a pretty hefty water bill.

I went back and looked at which unit I ordered from thefilterguys and it does come with a auto shut off valve.   I just need to add a float.  I think I will pickup a float and still drill the top of the tank and send it to the drain.  (Just in case)

Assuming the ASOV is plumbed in correctly, and is working, there is no need to physically turn off the water supply to the RODI.  That said, if you want the peace of mind that turning off the water provides, then there is no need for the ASOV.

If anyone needs instructions for installing an ASOV, let us know and we can email them to you.

I just installed on and am using a leveloc for my autotopoff on my top off container. The valve is closed and the waist water just contues to flow. I am using a baracuda ro, ebay auto shutoff valve and check valve, also using a pressure tank as i heard air in ro system can mess with the shutoff valve. Anyone ever had this problem?

Yes, if you have a pressure storage tank, you really need to use a permeate pump in that system.   I had the same problem....

The only reason to have a tank is if you are making drinking water.

Alright I am going to to try to remove the tank and just run the ro directly to my level loc. See if it shuts off or not. Looks like the pump may be worth it if saves that much water though. Does it really save that much?

You need to keep very low back pressure on the RO membrane outlet.   If you are trying to build pressure in a storage tank, the permeate pump is the easiest way to do that.   In just a top off situation, I doubt it saves water.
