2010 Reef Octopus NWB-200 PHOTO HEAVY
« on: March 11, 2010, 21:15:16 »
Well I thought I would share some pics of the new 2010 Reef Octopus NWB-200 and the 90 gallon tank that it's on. It's rated for up to 250 gallons, but I wanted to have it bigger in case I wanted to upgrade tanks later. This skimmer replaced a Coralife 125 skimmer. I have to say that this is a major upgrade compared to the coralife and the Red Sea Berlin that I have had in the past. Sorry about the pics. They were taken on a cell phone.

I was really surprised how well they packed this thing.

The skimmer body is a nice 15" 3/4 tall.

The collection cup measures 8" 5/8.

The neck has a diameter of 5"1/4 across

Nice big pump.

Model: OTP-3000
Max. Flow: 3000L / H or about 794 gph

7" L x 5 1/2 Wide with neck x 4 1/2 high

final footprint 15.6 x 10.1, diameter 7.8, and height is 23.4

The skimmer took about 3 days to break in. I had to let it run wide open after that. I started to adjust it 1/8" at a time, let it settle for about 5 min, then adjust it some more. All in all it took about 1hr to adjust.

Nice skimmer scott.  I notice it has a bubble plate.  What is the main purpose for these?  I thought about adding one to mine but didnt know if my skimmer would benefit from one.

Bubble plates are to help reduce turbulence in the skimmer body. The less spinning and and turning the better the bubbles attract proteins.

I agree on the big pump I thought this would use the Sicce pump like the MSX Skimmers... that is the same Octopus pump my old SWC NW-200 skimmer used. Looks like it is skimmer pretty good though.  I need to update my skimmer thread I just cleaned my cup so maybe I will do that tomorrow.  How many fish do you have and how heavily do you feed?

There is 12 fish, a sea cucumber, 4 starfish, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 clam,  and LOTS of different SPS, LPS, softies, etc. I rotate my feeding. One day is flake food (Omega 1 Marine Flake). I give them a big pinch of that 2 times on that day. The next day I give them my own blend of fish food ( I shut the pumps off for about 15 minutes for this one, but leave 1 Koralia going.), and this is what I put in it: phytoplankton, blood worms, cyclopease, oyster feast, oyters, squid, scallops, red and green seaweed, garlic, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. ( I think that's everything.) I make it in batches every 6 months and it seems to feed everything in the tank. Then, the next day is back to flake food. When I feed my blend, I see that even the mushrooms are fat with food and the zoas are closed up from eating.

JD- I didn't realize that it was going to be that big either. I had to modify my sump to fit it in. That was one of the first things I commented on when I opened it up, and the reason for posting measurements. ( Just in case someone else was looking to buy one, they could plan better with a size.)

jjoos- Jd is right about the reason for the bubble plate. that is one of the reasons that I chose this model. Here is a straight down shot of it when it was new.

Anyway, Thanks for the comments, guys.

Wow twelve fish what kind of fish do you have?  It doesn't sound like anyone goes hungry.  Like I said earlier that pump is big but I never ad any issues with the one I had on my old skimmer I had it for two years and only cleaned the pump twice.  I like how they attached the pump to the body with a straight connection though.

Nobody ever goes hungry. I have a pair of gold stripe maroon clowns, 1 pajama cardinal, 1 yellow watchman, 1 yellow tang, 1 vlamingi tang, 1 firefish, 1 purple firefish, 1 blue damsel, 1 lyre tail chromis, 1 oscellaris clown in the sump, and if it is still alive, there is 1 yellow coris wrasse. I can't seem to find him because he burrows under the sand, so I am not sure if he is still there or not. Oh yeah, there is also a Royal urchin in there that we call "Lurch"

I just got an octopus extreme 200 but I got the Seccie(?) pump with mine; smaller but still large footprint.

I got it at Premium Aquatics online. They were running a sale and had free shipping at the time. I got a good deal on it.
