Halide selection
« on: August 28, 2010, 01:27:30 »
It's about time for new bulbs I really like the XM 20k's but I think I want to go with some bulbs that put out decent par and look similar to the XM 20k's.  Anyone have any suggestions I have two ARO 250 Watt electronic ballast?

They are listed as 12k, but they are bluer than most 14k bulbs.  If you have a SE bulb, they are a very nice color, even without supplement.  The DE bulb is a little whiter, I still ran a t5 actinic with mine,

The Phoenix 14K's are a tad less blue than the XM 20K's.

Hummm... I run SE bulbs.  Out of the Blueline and the Reeflux which produces more par?  I can't seem to find any numbers to compare the two

That is a tricky question, in my opinion, PAR is much more related to the reflectors that you are using.   My 12k 250W DE Reeflux had a par of about 600 right at the water surface.   The lights were about 12" off of the water surface.   But my light fell off quickly under the water with my crappy parabolic reflectors.    Ballasts will also affect this.

Not sure if they measured the lights in question, but here is a good place to look

I am extremely happy with the new pair of 20k Artemis bulbs I bought for 15$ each with arrival from Canada in three business days.

I have not ordered the PAR meter yet but think it is pretty good because I bleached a couple of corals. I am so happy with them going to order 4 more at this price to be sure I have a stock in case they change or are no longer available.

I have the crappy PFO parallel reflectors but after looking at Sanjays site they don't look like they are as bad as I thought.  Right now my bulbs are 4 1/2 to 5" off of the water surface the reflector are literally an inch off the water.  I'm building a new canopy tomorrow so im building it about three inches taller and adding a fan to help with cooling.  How does the Artemis compare to XM 20k's (if you know) are they as blue or close to it?

I found where someone did a comparision between a Reeflux 20k and a Artemis 20k and the Artemis out performed the Reeflux.  I would link the page but I can't remember is that is aloud.  Other people said the Artemis 14k looked ever better.  I ordered the 14k Artemis they can't be as bad as the Plusrite I'm running now (I usually use Reeflux 20k).

How does the Artemis compare to XM 20k's (if you know) are they as blue or close to it?

I can only compare them to Radium 20k and they look almost identical. Maybe someone that has used both Radium and XM will chime.
I also bought 14k 400w Artemis and installed them yesterday. WOW they are bright  :-Sun

It is all good Wes, I will pick up from Dave when he is done, wanted to stop by and see his light rack anyway. Then return to you so I can see your setup.

The only comment I have PAR wise is, when I checked Jeffs tank we compared used 10k and 20ks. At a given height 10ks par was 250 while the 20k was 150
